What is your idea of Bliss?
According to Yogi tea wisdom, which come from the wisdom filled quotes that hang off the Yogi tea I like to drink,
"Bliss is a constant state of mind,
undisturbed by gain or loss."
This is a powerful idea, belief system, statement, whatever you may want to call it.
The first time I saw this saying hanging off one of my Yogi tea bags, it left me speechless. I had never thought that bliss could be a CONSTANT State of Mind. Sure, a fleeting state of mind, maybe even an occasional state if we are lucky. I suspect that most Americans don't think much about bliss. We are consumed with just getting through the rat-racey day, just surviving until the next crisis or until we have to begin the next jam packed day. So, I had to really let this concept sink into my awareness and permeate my being.
This took a while as most things do for me that challenge my usual way of thinking.
I don't remember exactly how long. Safe to say it was many months.
And then there was the second half of the statement, that bliss is "undisturbed by gain or loss." This was a much bigger pill to swallow or "allow" into my consciousness. This little phrase really shook up the way I thought about a lot of things and quite frankly mad me angry when I thought about it.
I grew up with the idea that more is better. I was taught to work hard, to achieve success, acquire things, even degrees which of course make you smarter, right? So with that mode of thinking, then loss is bad. Loss means less, which means I am less, I have less, I am less important in the world, perhaps even less intelligent.
So all of those concepts began being challenged. Deep down in my core, I know that more is not better. And I know that less doesn't not mean that I am a failure.
So, what did it mean to me to "be undisturbed by gain or loss?"
It meant to be at peace. It meant to remain neutral (not apathetic or unresponsive) to achieving something or losing something. It meant to be even keeled. And in the end, I found it to mean to be happy no matter what is happening on the outside or what I am thinking and/or feeling on the inside. For me, being undisturbed by gain or loss means that everything is going to work out. That I don't need to be afraid or panic. And that bliss could really be a natural and constant state of mind.
When all was said and done, this process took well over a year. There were a lot of questions, many inner challenges and arguments of long held beliefs and ideas. There was silence, contemplation, more questions. Then came the dismantling of old thought waves and patterns. And then came the re-wiring or introduction of the new more loving thought or idea. And this took a lot of care and watering like you would a new young tender plant or seedling.
A couple web definitions of bliss include:
euphoria
2. verb: reach a state of perfect happiness, typically so as to be oblivious of
everything else. eg. "blissed-out hippies"
What does bliss mean to and for you?
Can you try it on as a constant state of mind regardless of what is happening
around you?
Be curious and see where your journey takes You!!!
